Call for Workshops on CIP Conference Madrid • June 8th 2018 • Unique opportunity to work together with worldwide peers

This year’s conference will take place on Friday 8 June 2018 in Madrid. If you are interested in joining, please save the date and sign up for news. We will inform you about the programme, speakers, fees and further details in due time.

As we did last year in Lisbon we opt for a formula with keynote speakers and workshops and will work with 3 tracks.

Track 1: Polarization / the new normal?  Are we facing a society were fake news, mass manipulation techniques and propaganda are the norm?

Track 2: Cyber challenges / can we be prepared?  Our fast moving digitizing environment is challenging us all. How can we benefit, and yet be safe navigating this cyber future?

Track 3: Business, crisis and resilience / Today’s managers live in the fast track! All management feels like crisis management. What are the lessons to be learned?

The aim of these workshops is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in risk management, crisis management, risk communication, crisis communication or any other domain related to risk and crisis. They are a platform to share knowledge and reflect on each other’s  work and offer a unique opportunity to work together with worldwide peers.

In this workshop I will review the white heroin warning campaign from the City of Amsterdam (2015 – 2016). I was communication advisor in the crisis team. In a short time period 3 tourist died and 20 where in life threatening situations because a drug dealer sold extremely dangerous white heroin as cocaine to tourists. Continue reading

Since our formula of keynote speakers and workshops was highly appreciated by the attendees of our past conferences, we are continuing on the same path. Workshop: Better risk communication about fires involving hazardous materials. Risk perception and the mental models approach.

One of the workshops at our CIP Conference 2016 on 1 July 2016 at Antwerp Management School.

In January 2011, a major fire erupted at a chemical storage and packing company in The Netherlands. In the aftermath, the risk communication to the public was heavily criticised. In the present study, we employed a mental models approach to improve risk communication in case of a fire involving hazardous materials.

Workshop: Flipping the response: What can self-organizing communities do for you during a crisis?

Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and many other platforms have enabled citizens to connect, communicate and collaborate with each other in a previously unparalleled manner. Recent critical events, both natural and man-made have shown us that this is not limited to carpooling (Uber) and couch surfing (Airbnb). Today, in times of crisis, people reach back to these platforms for information, communication and even coordination: Facebook groups are formed by spontaneous volunteers to help, Twitter becomes an information exchange platform and Whatsapp becomes a viable alternative to connect and coordinate with others.

Workshop: Spontaneous volunteers and crisis communication during a disaster. How to deal with citizen participation initiatives.

Governmental institutions and organizations prepare for disasters. They draw up emergency plans and organize emergency exercises. In most of those plans and exercises, spontaneous volunteers and their initiatives that emerge in the case of a disaster, are not taken into account. However, a lot of international research has showed that in most disasters there was a form of spontaneous citizen help. Furthermore, the spontaneous volunteers were potentially very useful to cope with the disaster.
